Turbo Commander: Engine Start Deep Dive

#turboprop #turbocommander #aircraft #engines So you are probably wondering why my finger is on the HP limiter switch during the start sequence. This is something you will not find in the operating manual. By bumping or holding the HP LIMITER switch in the TEST position we can reduce the fuel supply to the engine thus controlling temps that may be trending to the hot side. This is very useful d...

Turbo Commander - KPHX Wind Shear X-Wind

Here we go again! Landing at KPHX in March 2022 with heavy x-wind and wind shear alerts. Nothing like trying to enter a frequency on the GTN750 touchscreen when the plane is being tossed around like a dingy in the ocean. It is enough to make a pilot take the Lord's name in vain.

We visit Telluride, Colorado in the Citabria. Airport sits at 9,070 ft and is the second highest airport in the United States. It is known as a challenging airport due to strong and gusty winds and high density altitude. This video show a landing on runway 9 and a takeoff and departure from runway 27. Video is from May 2021. Turbo Commander - Overhead Break

A quick video covering an overhead break to runway 12 at KSAD, Safford, Arizona. Not a typical civilian traffic pattern maneuver, only try this if you wish you were a military pilot or you were a military pilot at some point in your life and think that you still are in your RV-8 or Bonanza. I am neither so I did this at a non-towered airport with no traffic to spare frustration and cringe-worth...

lol the laugh of the rudder making that plane his bitch lol😂😂😂
I'm pretty sure he thought it was all over for a second there.
My instructor taught me “PEAR” P-Pull throttle E-Elevator neutral A-Aileron neutral R-Rudder smashed to opposite side of spin Once the spin stops, then slowly pull back on yoke and give power again. Used to be standard practice for PPL.
Been there
THE FIRST THING YOU DO AT ALTITUDE WITH A POWER ON STALL IS GET ENGINE POWER TO IDLE, OPPOSITE RUDDER OR IN HIS CASE HE JUST LET GO OF THE CONTROLS WHICH WORKS TOO.
Dang, starting that thing is an ordeal.
This is so peak 😭😭
So cool😮
As CFI who provides spin training, I am SO GRATEFUL for this video. I can explain inadvertent spin entries all day long and foot stomp “do not use the ailerons to bring up a dropping wing” but that doesn’t carry near the weight of an actual real life example. I show this video when I give spin instruction. Classic. Thank you for posting!
No problem with this video, shows incorrect incipient actions and correct instructor recovery. Side-note: always secure loose items if possible- even notepads
Tell me you haven’t been thru spin training without telling me you haven’t been thru spin training
My heart sank watching this, but helped reinforce the lessons I've learnt. Thanks for sharing!
Cut throttle. neutral controls. Add rudder.
Better to do it at this altitude, rather than the landing circuit.
I owned a 300C for many years. Flew it from Michigan to Churchill, Canada and photographed whales. Learn to fly it and photograph at the same time. Great piston chopper.
You guys have a lot of Commanders in Safford...what is going on with that? Are all of them yours?
Yes, we have the largest fleet of Commanders west of the Mississippi
No ailerons, Right rudder! Right aileron make the left wing stall more,
Spin entry should be a required part of training if aircraft is capable. Same thing happened to me and the only reason I recovered is because I read the steps in a manual. Next flight with my instructor we did like 5 of them.
Just need a stalled AOA and a little bit of rudder. Then the roller coaster ride begins 😎👍
If you’re a student pilot watching this and you ever find yourself in this situation, POWER- Back to Idle AILERONS- Neutral PRESS OPPOSITE RUDDER ( Spinning to the left, Step on the right rudder pedal ) ( Spinning to the right, Step on the left rudder pedal ) Once the rotation stops, ease out of the dive by slowly applying back pressure and set the power back to Cruise.
Shows how ineffective aileron is in a stall
I love doing spins, super fun. Power back, nose up into a stall, just as you're reaching the stall point, slam full rudder and let the wing dip and ride it for a little bit. My CFI loved having me hold the spin for longer than even I wanted to lol.
Excellent presentation !!!
Well done!
Nice recovery
Seems like a deliberate spin.
Death spiral!…correct it with opposite rudder, not aileron
I believe that the B-26 has been parked there for at least 20 years.
So? I practiced spins routinely. Just not in my twin, because Cessna says not to. Also my HSI and remote gyro don’t like anything that could go inverted.
The biggest impact of the full right aileron input was Adverse Yaw. You need two things to depart controlled flight into a spin... stall and yaw. Aileron at high AOA exaggerates the adverse yaw impact. Next time post your audio comments in the video. That would make it far more effective.
the save is crazy
Ive flown the 85hp swift, the 125, 145, the only one i know of with the 150 which set a speed record in Tennessee, and one with a 220 Franklin. Each one was special. None were bad or second class. The 150 had the slots deleted. I think the Tennessee trip was around 1980 or so. The yokes are my preference because thats how they came out. The rudder travel is relatively large. A cushion may be required for some people to reach full travel. The 65 horse swift i flew was owned by a guy named Gus, who was 6'6". My dad taught him to fly in that airplane. That meant two adults in the summer heat. The propeller control was quite simple🙂 As i said, any of the powerplants worked fine, but truthfully, it really needs about 400horses🤗
Canadian private pilot exam in plane not sim included full spin and spiral dive recovery. Not just a demonstration from examiner- he would induce then go hands off and say show me recovery. Even more fun is doing it under the hood. Don’t understand why American examination doesn’t include both.
I've done that manouver in a ultralight. Was very scary, the speedometer made almost 2 full circle's and the stick shaked alot
Great video! I've just been doing circuits here in MSFS and really struggled getting the approach right over the trees so went hunting for youtube video to see how it's done!
Thank you!
We do them for fun 😊
Take a moment and READ the DESCRIPTION to the video. Fantastic explanation.
Beautiful!, very nice inst. panel, sounds great too! The approach looked a little shallow imo, nice landing though.
Simple: chop the power! Opposite rudder! Forward elevator! Recover from the dive! A spin is the easiest of ALL aerobatic maneuvers to do! It was once part of the Student Pilot, pre-solo curriculum, but the manufacturers began installing non-cageble gyro instruments on small aircaft like the Cessna 150 and talked the FAA into removing spin training! And countless people have died BECAUSE of it, including a good friend of mine!
Beautiful sunset on that landing.
My brother is flying the commander for some wildfire job...just curious, because he took this job to make a little money while waiting to start training for a type 121 job, but what company is "horrendous" that you are talking about? Hopefully not who he is going to work for.
Rudder rudder Rudder.....
This is a great learning video. Do not turn the yoke. recover with rudder. Once he took his hands off and used the rudder, and reduced throttle he recovered.
IMAGINE THIS WAS A SOLO FLIGHT
Aileron ??????????????? no !!!!!!!!!!
Came for the planes, read the comments , left during the !#$%^&!!, visor bs.
That thing autos like a man hole cover .ill take an enstrom anyday
Coz that’s what they do. Which is why they should be avoided at best, and respected at worst.
What was your airspeed on final?
i was just watching the aileron input the entire time lol, great learning experience
